Breathe Life into Your Summer With These Exquisite Words of Old and Rare Beauty

a little girl picks flowers in a field, enjoying the poetry and magic of summer

In these sun-kissed days, life takes on a poetic rhythm, a melody that resonates within our souls.

Warm nights are adorned with the enchanting flicker of fireflies, their gentle glow casting a spell of wonder upon our hearts. The taste of ripe berries bursting with sweetness, the scent of freshly cut grass, the feel of cool sand between our toes—it is in these moments that we realize life is poetry.

Of course there are moments in life when we yearn to capture the enchantment that surrounds us, yet struggle to find the perfect words to encapsulate its essence. And that’s okay- for even the most eloquent souls sometimes require a touch of inspiration from time to time.

Which is why I wanted to share these poetic words and their definitions with you today; in hopes they might inspire you to pen your own verses. So, may these definitions serve as the inspiration you need In those precious instances when the heart overflows with emotions. I hope you enjoy!

Aeonian (ee-OH-nee-uhn): Enduring through time, everlasting, or eternal, like the timeless beauty of a summer’s day

So word by word, and line by line,
The dead man touch'd me from the past,
And all at once it seem'd at last
The living soul was flash'd on mine,

And mine in this was wound, and whirl'd
About empyreal heights of thought,
And came on that which is, and caught
The deep pulsations of the world,

Æonian music measuring out
The steps of Time--the shocks of Chance--
The blows of Death.
 At length my trance
Was cancell'd, stricken thro' with doubt.

From By night we lingerd on the lawn
by Alfred Lord Tennyson

Panacea (pan-uh-SEE-uh): A remedy or solution for all difficulties, offering healing and rejuvenation.

Bucolic (byoo-KAH-lik): Relating to the charm and simplicity of country life, evoking images of idyllic summer landscapes.

Bucolic bliss blooms,

Golden meadow's sweet embrace,

Summer's whispered kiss.

Auguries (AW-gyuh-reez): Omens, signs, or predictions of future events, often associated with the enchantment of summer.

Solace (SOL-iss): Comfort, consolation, or relief from sorrow or distress, often found in nature’s embrace.

Evanescent (ev-uh-NES-uhnt): Fleeting, vanishing, or transitory, like the passing beauty of a summer flower.

Mellowsome (MEH-loh-suhm): Calming, soothing, and bringing a sense of contentment and peace.

Vagary (VAY-guh-ree): An unpredictable or whimsical idea, action, or occurrence.

Jubilant (JOO-buh-luhnt): Filled with joy, triumph, or celebration.

...trees upon the Common show
No hint of green; but to my listening heart
The still earth doth impart
Assurance of her jubilant emprise,
And it is clear to my long-searching eyes
That love at last has might upon the skies.
The ice is runneled on the little pond;
A telltale patter drips from off the trees;
The air is touched with southland spiceries,
As if but yesterday it tossed the frond
Of pendant mosses where the live-oaks grow

From An Ode in Time of Hesitation
by Moody, William Vaughn

Veridical (ver-IH-dih-kuhl): Truthful, honest, or accurately representing reality.

Quiescence (kwee-ESS-uhns): A state of quietness, stillness, or tranquility.

Mellifluous (muh-LIF-loo-uhs): Having a smooth, rich, and musical quality, pleasing to the ear.

Effervescent (ef-er-VES-uhnt): Bubbly and vivacious, like the fizzing of champagne or the excitement of a summer’s day.

If brightest bright were set ablaze amidst the night,
would people be plucked from this false sanctuary
which darkness so convincingly provides?
Then many a Lost could be freed;
if only to see clearly through effervescent
O blessed Sun!
With your arousal, Truth and Freedom will also renew -
until again that blank stare casts its malevolent glow on

From Ode To An Evening by Anthony Casamassima

Ethereal (ih-THEER-ee-uhl): Characterized by delicate, otherworldly beauty or grace.

Presages (PRE-suh-jes): Predictions or omens that foretell a future event, often with an air of anticipation or uncertainty.

Along the corridors of time,
our mind screens play what passed
before we fledged and fled our nests:
There is here and then is now.

Whether we tilt the earth to shake out
        wisdom, fame or empathy
or let chaos light our paths,
our curiosity is a sturdy ladder raised

to scale the walls of space and time.
Who cares that life presages death and
                decay calls breath from dust?
Our earthly sojourns - our souls' domain.

From Robert C Howard's poem
Boundaries of Time and Space

Quixotic (kwik-SOT-ik): Idealistic, unpredictable, and guided by impractical notions or romanticized ideas. Often associated with chivalry and a disregard for convention.

Capricious (kuh-PRI-shus): Impulsive, unpredictable, and subject to sudden changes or whims. Often used to describe something governed by a sense of playfulness or spontaneity.

How he would pour himself in every strife,
And well-nigh change his own identity--
That it might keep from his capricious play
His genuine self, and force him to obey
Even in his own despite his being's law,
Bade through the deep recesses of our breast
The unregarded river of our life
Pursue with indiscernible flow its way;
And that we should not see
The buried stream, and seem to be
Eddying at large in blind uncertainty,
Though driving on with it eternally.

Buried Life The
by Arnold, Matthew

Whimsy (WIM-zee): Playful, fanciful, and lighthearted in nature. Often associated with imaginative or quirky ideas, objects, or situations that evoke a sense of joy and amusement.
